31 July 2008 - Apache UIMA-AS (Asynchronous Scaleout) add-on for UIMA, version 2.2.2-incubating, Now Available

The Apache UIMA team is pleased to announce the first release of the UIMA-AS add-on for UIMA. (The release number is 2.2.2-incubating to correspond with the base UIMA level).

UIMA-AS adds a highly flexible, robust, and easy to use scaleout capability to the core UIMA framework; it can be considered to be a next-generation replacement for the original CPM (Collection Processing Management) scaleout that is part of the core UIMA framework.

Now you can selectively scale up (to take advantage of multiple cores) or scale out (over local and/or wide area networks) just those analytics that need the scaling, thus allowing optimization of computing resources. UIMA-AS has been successfully used on multiple projects, and scaled out to 100's of cores, with no limit in sight.

It makes use of JMS (Java Messaging Services) and uses Apache ActiveMQ to support messaging between components. Already written UIMA Components can take advantage of UIMA-AS scaleout with no code or component descriptor changes.

There is a short writeup that describes more details about the new capabilities and how to get started using it, on the UIMA website: http://incubator.apache.org/uima/doc-uimaas-what.html

UIMA is a component framework supporting integration and deployment of components for the analysis of unstructured content such as text, audio, and video; the main web-site is here: http://incubator.apache.org/uima/index.html

Thank you for your interest in Apache UIMA-AS. We look forward to hearing about your experience in using this new capability.

21 June 2007 - Apache OpenJPA Graduates from Incubation to Become Top Level Project

The Apache OpenJPA Project Team is pleased to announce that the Apache Incubator has recommended, and the Apache Board of Directors has accepted, a resolution to create the Apache OpenJPA Top Level Project.

Apache OpenJPA is a project that implements Object Relational Mapping, and currently implements the standard JCP JSR-220 Java Persistence API (JPA). The latest release passes the JCP TCK for JSR-220 100%, meaning it is fully compliant with the standard.

Starting with a contribution by BEA of the mapping engine and JPA interface from the popular Kodo project, OpenJPA attracted support from a diverse set of contributors, committers, and users from independent individuals and companies, including several Apache projects. The project has learned how to govern itself and has produced two releases while in incubation.

To assist in developing persistence applications OpenJPA works out-of-the-box with popular IDE's such as Eclipse and Netbeans. Additionally, plugin modules are available for the Apache Maven software project management and comprehension tool.

Many projects have adopted OpenJPA to provide the Object Relational Mapping for their needs, including Apache ActiveMQ, BEA Kodo, BEA WebLogic Server, Apache Camel, Apache Geronimo, Apache Ode, Apache OpenEJB, and IBM WebSphere Application Server. The community plans shortly to release version 1.0.0 of OpenJPA, reflecting the maturity and production quality of the code base.

Additionally, OpenJPA has been integrated with numerous other frameworks including Spring Framework, GlassFish, JOnAS Application Server, Sun Java System Application Server.

09 March 2005 - The Apache Directory Project Exits Incubator

The Apache Directory team proudly announces the Apache Directory project graduated incubation under the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) according to the ASF Board Summary for February 23, 2005.

Our primary vision is to build an enterprise directory server platform (Apache Directory Server) and its components where other Internet services snap in to store their data within the directory so they may be managed using LDAP. Those services include LDAP itself, DNS, DHCP, SLP, UDDI, NTP, and most importantly Kerberos, which can integrate with the services to provide full-featured network authentication service.

Features of Apache Directory Server:

  • Designed as an LDAP and X.500 experimentation platform.

  • The server exposes all aspects of administration via a special system backend.

  • Both the backend subsystem and the frontend are separable and independently embeddable.

  • Provides a server side JNDI LDAP provider which directly interacts with the backend storage.

  • Powered by MINA, a powerful framework for building Internet protocol servers.

Coming soon:

  • Remote management via JMX.

  • Java-based triggers and stored procedures.

The Apache Directory team is looking for developers and users to work with the server and give feedback. Mailing list information is at: http://directory.apache.org/mailing-lists.html

Check the Apache Directory project at: http://directory.apache.org/

The Apache Software Foundation provides organizational, legal, and financial support for a broad range of open source software projects. The Foundation provides an established framework for intellectual property and financial contributions that simultaneously limits contributors potential legal exposure. Through a collaborative and meritocratic development process, Apache projects deliver enterprise-grade, freely available software products that attract large communities of users.

17 October 2004 - Apache Avalon Merlin becomes Metro

Following various discussions with the Apache Avalon PMC, select ASF members and others, the active developers of the Merlin source code together with a number of dedicated users have formulated a plan to escalate and expand the development of the Metro platform outside of ASF.

We have compiled a complete roadmap of what this means in practical terms to various user groups, available at;
http://www.dpml.net/dpml/admin/pdfs/metro-roadmap-20041007.pdf

We hope that this document covers most aspects of the involved fork, even though it is not yet complete. For instance, the document doesn't yet explain exactly how this will take form.

  • Digital Product Meta Library (dpml.net) is an existing resource hub of digital products. We have agreed to utilize this name and the resources available behind it, mainly ibiblio.org.
  • Driven by our user focus here in Avalon, we are now pushing the "Open" in "OSS" to a concept that we call "Open Participation Software". Contributions and committer status are available to everyone.
  • Organizational Lightweight, open process, open participation, ASL2.0, and lots of fun.

We are not fully up to speed (yet), but have the following resources available, which should be sufficient for most users at this point in time;

(paris.dpml.net will become operational *soon*, as we are awaiting ibiblio.org admin's to add the host to the DNS and a new IP to be installed. Sorry for the inconvenience, and announcement of availability will be made on the admin-dpml@ mailing list.)

We would like to thank the entire ASF, members, committers and users for the time at the Apache Avalon project, for their valuable support and the experience we have gained. Perhaps Metro's and ASF's paths meet again in the future.

Cheers,

25 May 2004 - [Press Release] ASF and BEA jointly announce Apache Beehive

BEA and Apache Software Foundation Announce Project Beehive to be Part of Apache Open Source Community

"Apache Beehive" Planned as Industry's First Easy-to-Use Open Source Application Framework for Building Service-Oriented Architectures and Enterprise Java-based Applications

SAN FRANCISCO BEA eWORLD 2004 CONFERENCE May 25, 2004

BEA Systems (Nasdaq: BEAS), the worlds leading application infrastructure software company, and the Apache Software Foundation today announced the acceptance of Project Beehive as an open-source project in the Apache community. Based on the runtime application framework in BEA WebLogic Workshop, Apache Beehive is designed to be the industrys first, easy-to-use, open source foundation for building enterprise Java and service-oriented architecture (SOA) applications. Apache Beehive is designed to foster new innovations through industry wide collaboration, ensure investment protection for both developer skills and applications, and expand the community of Java developers.

Through Apache Beehive, BEA is broadening the appeal of its innovations by collaborating with the open source community, said Greg Stein, chairman, Apache Software Foundation. With the momentum of the open-source community, Apache Beehive has the potential to make Java enterprise application development easier to use giving developers state-of-the-art innovations for any Java platform.

The Apache Software Foundation, the leading open source community partner for commercial companies, provides organizational, legal, and financial support for a broad range of open source software projects. The Apache Software Foundation can ensure the continuity of open source software projects beyond the participation of individual volunteers and can enable contributions of intellectual property and financial support on a sound basis providing a vehicle for limiting legal exposure for open source contributors. Projects overseen by the Apache Software Foundation can carry forth the commitment to open collaboration, active participation from the Internet developer community and commercial grade, freely available software.

Apache Beehive further builds on key Apache projects with which BEA has had either direct or indirect involvement, such as XMLBeans, Tomcat, Struts, and Axis. With Beehive, BEA is helping to strengthen the open source community by contributing top BEA engineering talent joined with the expertise of the larger BEA WebLogic Workshop developer community. BEA is also pleased that several veteran open-source developers in Apache have agreed to help guide the direction of the project.

BEA WebLogic Workshop consists of two major technologies, a powerful integrated development environment and an application framework, to help abstract some of the more complex tasks associated with Java Web and SOA development, said Scott Dietzen, chief technology officer, BEA Systems. The Apache Foundation was our first choice for the Beehive open source project. With the Apache community's help in open sourcing the Workshop application framework, we hope to help a greater number of Java developers build and orchestrate Java applications far more easily and without having to sacrifice portability and long-term investment protection.

Beehive will be based on award-winning technology found in BEA WebLogic Workshop, including Java annotations, Java Controls, Java Web services and Java Page Flows, which drive increased interoperability and developer productivity. Project Beehive leverages WebLogic Workshops Controls, reusable meta-data driven software components based on drag-and-drop technology that can easily integrate into BEA and other software platforms. In addition, Beehive also builds on BEAs innovative Web services programming capabilities that allow for easier consumption and management of services, and page flows, which can help developers quickly and easily define and view page transitions between applications. Project Beehive can attract new users to a simpler way to build enterprise Java applications, while also attracting experienced Java Web and J2EE programmers with a model that is designed to save them from writing the same Java plumbing code over and over again.

Pricing and Availability

Beehive is expected to be available this summer for free under the standard Apache 2.0 license. For more information on Beehive, please visit http://dev2dev.bea.com/technologies/beehive/index.jsp

    with any JAXB generator. See

    here

    for details.

  • A clean room implementation of the JAXB API. See

    here

for details. This implementation replaces the files jaxb-api.jar,
jax-qname.jar, and namespace.jar from the JAXB RI.

  • JaxMeXS, a parser for XML Schema, specifically designed for code
generators based on XML Schema or language extensions like JAXB.
    See

    here

    for details.

  • JaxMeJS, a generic framework for writing source generators. It views
the generated sources as an object tree, which may be manipulated in
multiple stages. For example, in the case of JaxMe, one distinguishes
between elements with multiplicity 1 (single objects) and multiplicity
    > 1 (lists). The pipelining process enables handling of these elements
in two stages, where stage 2 (lists) is based on the work of stage 1
(single objects). JaxMeJS includes a framework for generating SQL
queries, following the same ideas. See

    here

    for details.

24 September 2003 - XMLBeans Is Now Under Incubation in XML.APACHE.ORG

XMLBeans is an XML-Java binding tool that uses XML Schema as a basis for generating Java classes to be used to easily access XML instance data. It was designed to provide both easy access to XML information via convenient Java classes as well as complete access to the underlying XML, combining the best of low-level, full access APIs like SAX and DOM with the convenience of Java binding.

The Apache Incubator provides an entry path to the Apache Software Foundation. XMLBean has been accepted and is starting to make it's first steps along this path with the Apache XML Project as the eventual destination. The source has now been entered into ASF repositories and the mailing lists are open for debate. More details can be found on the XML Beans web site.

24 September 2003 - JaxMe Is Now Under Incubation in WS.APACHE.ORG

JaxMe 2 is an open source implementation of JAXB, the specification for Java/XML binding. A Java/XML binding compiler takes as input a schema description (in most cases an XML schema, but it may be a DTD, a RelaxNG schema, a Java class inspected via reflection, or a database schema). The output is a set of Java classes:

  • A Java bean class matching the schema description. (If the schema was obtained via Java reflection, the original Java bean class.)
  • Read a conforming XML document and convert it into the equivalent Java bean
  • Vice versa, marshal the Java bean back into the original XML document.

The Apache Incubator provides an entry path to the Apache Software Foundation. JaxMe has been accepted and is starting to make it's first steps along this path with the Apache Web Services Project as the eventual destination. The source has now been entered into ASF repositories and the mailing lists are open for debate. More details can be found on the JaxMe web site.

22 August 2003 - LDAPd 0.71a released.

LDAPd has released an interim alpha bug fix release, 0.71a before major architectural changes to emerge in the new LDAPd Server code named 'Eve'. LDAPd is a standalone and embeddable Avalon based LDAPv3 server leveraging several Apache software packages. LDAPd employs a Staged Event Driven Architecture and will eventually have support for LDAP Java stored procedures, and triggers along with a server side JNDI LDAP provider. The server side JNDI LDAP provider enables easy integration into the process space of host applications and will serve as the data access API for server side code in stored procedures and triggers. LDAPd is currently preparing its proposal for the Apache Incubator in the hopes of adding to the suite of flagship Apache protocol servers.

Please see the LDAPd Website for more details.

05 August 2003 - Apache Geronimo -- participation in Apache J2EE efforts

As you may have heard by now, the Apache Software Foundation has initiated a project to develop an open source, Apache-licensed implementation of the J2EE specification. In addition, the project is committed to certifying the implementation as J2EE compliant. This is an ambitious goal and will present a formidable challenge for the people involved, given the wide range of technologies covered by the specification.

The project (tentatively named "Apache Geronimo") builds upon the many Java projects at the Apache Software Foundation. In addition, the project is bringing together leading members of the Castor, JBoss, MX4J and OpenEJB communities. We would like to extend an open invitation to everyone involved in the J2EE space, both commercial entities and talented individuals, to join the community and build a world-class J2EE implementation.

The Apache Software Foundation is in a unique position to build a J2EE compliant platform. Our non-profit, charity status, and our relationship with Sun Microsystems, provides the Foundation with access to the J2EE TCKs, making it possible to achieve certification. In addition, our flexible and unrestrictive licensing makes it possible for a wide variety of participants to assist in the development of Apache Geronimo, and to build their own solutions upon the platform.

Apache Geronimo has been launched within the Apache Incubator. You can find more information about the Incubator at http://incubator.apache.org/.

Mailing Lists
Apache Geronimo has two mailing lists of interest:

geronimo-dev@incubator.apache.org
geronimo-cvs@incubator.apache.org
The geronimo-dev mailing list is where all the discussion occurs. The geronimo-cvs mailing list receives commit mails each time a commit is made to the incubator-geronimo CVS module.

You can subscribe to the mailing lists by sending an email to one or both of the following addresses:

geronimo-dev-subscribe@incubator.apache.org
geronimo-cvs-subscribe@incubator.apache.org

The original proposal of Geronimo can be found from here.

For more information, visit the The Apache Geronimo (Tentative) Website

On behalf of the Apache Geronimo Team,
Greg Stein,
Chairman of the Apache Software Foundation
