02 September 2007 - Apache Log4J 1.2.15 Released

The Apache Logging Services project is pleased to announce the release of Apache log4j 1.2.15.

Apache log4j 1.2.15 is a maintenance release of log4j 1.2 (http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2). The list of fixed issues is available at http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/changes-report.html. The release may be downloaded from http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/download.html and is also available in the master Maven repository (groupId: log4j, artifactId: log4j, version: 1.2.15).

The extras companion for log4j 1.2 (http://logging.apache.org/log4j/companions/extras) provides extra features to log4j 1.2 users and should work with log4j 1.2.9 and later. The companion may work with earlier versions of log4j 1.2 but that has not been tested. Features provided by the extras companion include: parameterized logging (with either java.text.MessageFormat or log4j 1.3 patterns), Regular expression filters, rolling file appender with replaceable triggering and file naming policies and an enhanced pattern layout with support for longer pattern names, more abbreviation options, and time zone specification for date fields. The release may be downloaded from http://logging.apache.org/log4j/companions/extras/download.html and is also available in the master Maven repository (groupId: log4j, artifactId: apache-log4j-extras, version 1.0).

With the availability of log4j 1.2.15 and the extras companion, users of the log4j 1.3 alpha versions are encouraged to plan to migrate to log4j 1.2.15 with the appropriate companions or to track and contribute to the log4j 2.0 development effort. Development of log4j 1.3 is abandoned and no additional development or releases are anticipated.

12 December 2005 - Apache Log4j 1.2.13 Released

Apache Log4j is available for download from a number of mirrors. Please use these mirrors as they improve download time and save bandwidth.

Log4j version 1.2.13 contains several bug fixes related to the TRACE level introduced in version 1.2.12 and a fix in the ConsoleAppender for a bug that affected JBoss.

The next major release of log4j will be version 1.3. It will contain many new features and changes, and if you have written custom code, it may need to be modified to work with it. Please see the document entitled preparing for log4j 1.3 for a more detailed discussion.

09 September 2005 - Apache log4j 1.2.12 Released

The Apache log4j team (The Apache Logging Services Project) is proud to announce the official release of log4j 1.2.12.

This new version contains a number of bug fixes, the addition of the much requested TRACE level, and is compile and runtime compatible with the earlier JDK's 1.1 and 1.2 (this feature had been inadvertently broken in version 1.2.11). Other than the addition of the TRACE level, the api is identical to earlier versions of 1.2.X.

You can download version 1.2.12 from:

http://logging.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi

The log4j team expects this to be the last release for the log4j 1.2.X series. Focus is now going to be applied to completing the long awaited version 1.3 which will have a number of additions and improvements (early alpha versions are also available at the above link).

18 December 2003 - Apache Logging Services Project Launched

The log4j developers are pleased to announce that the Board of Directors of the Apache Software Foundation unanimously passed a resolution for the creation of the Apache Logging Services project. A copy of the resolution can be found at:
http://nagoya.apache.org/wiki/apachewiki.cgi?LoggingApacheOrg/BoardResoluion

The Logging Services project is intended to provide cross-language logging services for purposes of application debugging and auditing. The discussions leading to the submission of this resolution can be found at:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=107115526200001&r=1&w=2

We should also mention that thanks to the relentless efforts of many developers and in particular those of Scott Deboy, we currently have inter-operability between the following projects:

Log4Cxx (c++)
Log4CPlus
Log4j
Log4Net
Log4Perl
Log4PHP
JDK1.4's util.logging framework

There is still much work ahead bringing in the various projects to work together within the Logging Services Project. The process is likely to take a little while. In the mean time, we will continue to do what we like best, that is developing open source software.
