Asia OS Summit Asia is produced by OS Summit LLC and supported by The Apache Software Foundation (http://www.apache.org) and the Eclipse Foundation (http://www.eclipse.org).
The Apache OpenJPA Project Team is pleased to announce that the Apache Incubator has recommended, and the Apache Board of Directors has accepted, a resolution to create the Apache OpenJPA Top Level Project.
Apache OpenJPA is a project that implements Object Relational Mapping, and currently implements the standard JCP JSR-220 Java Persistence API (JPA). The latest release passes the JCP TCK for JSR-220 100%, meaning it is fully compliant with the standard.
Starting with a contribution by BEA of the mapping engine and JPA interface from the popular Kodo project, OpenJPA attracted support from a diverse set of contributors, committers, and users from independent individuals and companies, including several Apache projects. The project has learned how to govern itself and has produced two releases while in incubation.
To assist in developing persistence applications OpenJPA works out-of-the-box with popular IDE's such as Eclipse and Netbeans. Additionally, plugin modules are available for the Apache Maven software project management and comprehension tool.
Many projects have adopted OpenJPA to provide the Object Relational Mapping for their needs, including Apache ActiveMQ, BEA Kodo, BEA WebLogic Server, Apache Camel, Apache Geronimo, Apache Ode, Apache OpenEJB, and IBM WebSphere Application Server. The community plans shortly to release version 1.0.0 of OpenJPA, reflecting the maturity and production quality of the code base.
Additionally, OpenJPA has been integrated with numerous other frameworks including Spring Framework, GlassFish, JOnAS Application Server, Sun Java System Application Server.

The Apache Software Foundation has established three new Top Level Projects (TLP) - Apache Quetzalcoatl, Apache Wicket, and Apache Commons.
Apache POI has moved to a TLP at its new address, http://poi.apache.org.
Apache POI provides set of APIs for creating, reading, and writing files based upon the OLE 2 Compound Document Format using only Java.
Apache Turbine has moved to a TLP at its new address, http://turbine.apache.org.
Apache Turbine is a Java Servlet Web Application Framework and associated component library.
Apache OpenEJB has graduated from the Apache Incubator and is now a top-level project (TLP) at Apache.
Apache Felix has graduated from Apache Incubator to become a top level project at the Apache Software Foundation.
Apache ActiveMQ has graduated from the Incubator to become a top level project (TLP) at Apache. Many thanks to all those in the Incubator and ActiveMQ communities for making this happen
Apache ActiveMQ is a distributed messaging system which supports clients in Java (JMS), C++, Ruby, Python and other languages. Apache ActiveMQ is fast, provides many advanced features, and fully supports JMS 1.1 and J2EE 1.4. Apache ActiveMQ is released under the Apache License, Version 2.0.
For more information, please visit the new website at

The Apache Open For Business Project, a.k.a. Apache OFBiz, is now officially a TLP (top level project) at the Apache Software Foundation -- see here for more details on the incubation status.
Apache Velocity is an Java templating engine. Apache Velocity has moved from Jakarta to a TLP (top level project -- with its PMC, project management committee) at its new address, http://velocity.apache.org.
Apache Harmony is now a top-level project of the Apache Software Foundation.
Apache HiveMind (formerly known as Jakarta HiveMind under the Apache Jakarta Project) now has its own PMC (project management committee) and new project URL -- http://hivemind.apache.org/
The Apache XML-Security project has voted to raise to a TLP named Apache Santuario and to broaden their scope to security software in general.
Berin Lautenbach, who had much contributed to the concept of Apache XML Federation framework, is the initial PMC Chair of new Apache Santuario Project.
On behalf of the ASF (Apache Software Foundation) Board and Apache Struts PMC, we are pleased to announce that Apache Shale has been accepted as a top-level project of the Apache Software Foundation.
As a top-level project, Shale will have its own website, mailing lists, repository space, and Project Management Committee. Shale will be an automomous ASF project, rather than a subproject of Apache Struts.
The Shale framework for JavaServer Faces is nearing its first stable release. As a top-level project, it will be easier for Shale to attract new developers and expand its growing community.
The initial set of PMC members and committers for Shale is:
Apache Shale has strong ties to both the Struts and MyFaces projects. Most of the Shale PMC members are already involved in both projects, and plan on continuing to remain involved in them, along with Shale.
Apache Shale is a modern web application framework, intended for developers adopting JavaServer Faces as a core technology.
Shale began as a proposal for Struts 2.0, but instead became a subproject, so as to provide a JSF alternative for Struts developers. Recent developments for Struts Action 2 now make it easier for Struts developers to access JSF components from within an "action-based" application.
The initial Shale codebase was donated by Craig McClanahan, who also donated the original Struts codebase.
Apache Tapestry has moved to a TLP (Top Level Project) at its new address, http://tapestry.apache.org.
Apache Tapestry is an open-source framework for creating dynamic, robust, highly scalable web applications in Java. Tapestry complements and builds upon the standard Java Servlet API, and so it works in any servlet container or application server.

Greetings, members of the Apache community.
As the end of the year approaches, we would like to remind you that you don't have to write code or documentation to contribute to the Apache Software Foundation.
This is the time of year that many people look to donate money to charity not only out of the goodness of their heart, but for the purposes of tax deductions, which makes Tax Day just that much nicer in the United States.
The Apache Software Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, and if you pay taxes in the United States, any money that you contribute is tax deductible.
You can contribute via PayPal:
http://www.apache.org/foundation/contributing.html#Paypal
Or by check:
http://www.apache.org/foundation/contributing.html#SnailMail
For all the details, please see the contributing page, located here:
http://www.apache.org/foundation/contributing.html
Many companies have "Matching Gift Programs" that will double or triple your tax-deductible contributions. Check with your personnel office to find out if your company offers this--they should be able to provide you with a form that you can fill out and send in with your contribution. If your employer wishes to donate to the ASF, please have them contact us at fundraising@apache.org
Please email fundraising@apache.org if you have any questions or comments.

Apache XML Graphics Project Launched and New Website Has Been Created. This is one of the major steps of the Apache XML Project to promote its projects upwards and become a federation, or a central information repository, of all the XML-related projects at the ASF.
Apache XML Graphics Project is responsible for software licensed to the Apache Software Foundation intended for the creation & maintenance of:
Apache XML Graphics Project currently consists of the following sub-projects, each focused on a different aspect of XML Graphics:
Jeremias Maerki is the first Chair of the Apache XML Graphics PMC (Project Management Committee).
The Board of the Apache Software Foundation approved the creation of Apache Xalan PMC (Project Management Committee), with Brian Minchau as its Chair. It picks up the Xalan projects from Apache XML.
This is a part of an effort of the Apache XML Project to reduce the number of diseparate projects under its covers, with the hope that the smaller projects can provide more fine-tuned oversight and management of the codebases and communities, and is one of the major steps of the Apache XML Project to promote its projects upwards and become a federation, or a central information repository, of all the XML-related projects at the Apache Software Foundation.
Open letter: Issued to the IETF MARID Working Group regarding the Apache Software Foundation's position on Sender ID
-- for more information, visit http://www.apache.org/foundation/docs/sender-id-position.html --
Henri Yandell has been elected as
the next Jakarta Chair succeeding Geir Magnusson Jr.
Here's Henri eulogy for Geir:
By the way, in case it's Monday morning and everything is a haze, I should mention that the board have accepted the PMC's recommendation of myself as PMC chair to replace Geir. While Geir is an example of a developer who is synonymous with Jakarta,
he's now taking on the highly public role of Geronimo PMC chair which
should dovetail with his role as Apache's JCP representative quite nicely.I'm sure we're all very appreciative of his chairship over the last 6
months, and I'm looking forward to trying to live up to his and Sam's
example.
Apache XMLBeans Project has graduated out the Apache Incubator Project to become Top Level Project in the Apache Software Foundation. Apache XMLBeans provides a simplified model for interacting with XML documents. The project originated with a contribution from BEA Inc., however, after its time within the Apache Incubator, it is now a full-fledged Apache community and codebase under Apache License 2.0. Cliff Schmidt is the Chair of the new Apache XMLBeans PMC (Project Management Committee).
Note:
This is one of the steps of the Apache XML Project to promote its projects upwards and become a federation, or a central information repository, of all the XML-related projects at the ASF. Look for more promotions over the next few months.
The resolution below was brought before the Board of the Apache Software Foundation, and has passed. SpamAssassin has graduated from the Apache Incubator Project to become a full-fledged top level project in the Apache Software Foundation. Daniel Quinlan will be the PMC Chair of the Apache SpamAssassin.
This was finally made possible now that Network Associates officially transferred ownership of the SpamAssassin trademarks to the Apache Software Foundation. The Apache Software Foundation is now the proud owner of the fantastic SpamAssassin brand and the codebase. The SpamAssassin team is on the verge of releasing a long overdue 3.0 release.

The Geronimo project is now out of Apache Incubator and has been granted top-level project status by the ASF. The objective of the Apache Geronimo project is to produce an open source, certified implementation of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) specification licensed under the Apache License and offered to the public at no charge.
Since its inception in August 2003, the Geronimo project has been working under the oversight of the Apache Incubator, a process used by the ASF to ensure new projects build a healthy community. The process also provides oversight and inspection of the codebase to ensure that it conforms to the Foundation's high standards for licensing and code integrity.
The board of the apache software foundation approved the graduation of the Apache Geronimo project from within the Incubator to its own "top level" project. Geir Magnusson will be the new Chair of Apache Geronimo.

BEA and Apache Software Foundation Announce Project Beehive to be Part of Apache Open Source Community
"Apache Beehive" Planned as Industry's First Easy-to-Use Open Source Application Framework for Building Service-Oriented Architectures and Enterprise Java-based Applications
SAN FRANCISCO BEA eWORLD 2004 CONFERENCE May 25, 2004
BEA Systems (Nasdaq: BEAS), the worlds leading application infrastructure software company, and the Apache Software Foundation today announced the acceptance of Project Beehive as an open-source project in the Apache community. Based on the runtime application framework in BEA WebLogic Workshop, Apache Beehive is designed to be the industrys first, easy-to-use, open source foundation for building enterprise Java and service-oriented architecture (SOA) applications. Apache Beehive is designed to foster new innovations through industry wide collaboration, ensure investment protection for both developer skills and applications, and expand the community of Java developers.
Through Apache Beehive, BEA is broadening the appeal of its innovations by collaborating with the open source community, said Greg Stein, chairman, Apache Software Foundation. With the momentum of the open-source community, Apache Beehive has the potential to make Java enterprise application development easier to use giving developers state-of-the-art innovations for any Java platform.
The Apache Software Foundation, the leading open source community partner for commercial companies, provides organizational, legal, and financial support for a broad range of open source software projects. The Apache Software Foundation can ensure the continuity of open source software projects beyond the participation of individual volunteers and can enable contributions of intellectual property and financial support on a sound basis providing a vehicle for limiting legal exposure for open source contributors. Projects overseen by the Apache Software Foundation can carry forth the commitment to open collaboration, active participation from the Internet developer community and commercial grade, freely available software.
Apache Beehive further builds on key Apache projects with which BEA has had either direct or indirect involvement, such as XMLBeans, Tomcat, Struts, and Axis. With Beehive, BEA is helping to strengthen the open source community by contributing top BEA engineering talent joined with the expertise of the larger BEA WebLogic Workshop developer community. BEA is also pleased that several veteran open-source developers in Apache have agreed to help guide the direction of the project.
BEA WebLogic Workshop consists of two major technologies, a powerful integrated development environment and an application framework, to help abstract some of the more complex tasks associated with Java Web and SOA development, said Scott Dietzen, chief technology officer, BEA Systems. The Apache Foundation was our first choice for the Beehive open source project. With the Apache community's help in open sourcing the Workshop application framework, we hope to help a greater number of Java developers build and orchestrate Java applications far more easily and without having to sacrifice portability and long-term investment protection.
Beehive will be based on award-winning technology found in BEA WebLogic Workshop, including Java annotations, Java Controls, Java Web services and Java Page Flows, which drive increased interoperability and developer productivity. Project Beehive leverages WebLogic Workshops Controls, reusable meta-data driven software components based on drag-and-drop technology that can easily integrate into BEA and other software platforms. In addition, Beehive also builds on BEAs innovative Web services programming capabilities that allow for easier consumption and management of services, and page flows, which can help developers quickly and easily define and view page transitions between applications. Project Beehive can attract new users to a simpler way to build enterprise Java applications, while also attracting experienced Java Web and J2EE programmers with a model that is designed to save them from writing the same Java plumbing code over and over again.
Pricing and Availability
Beehive is expected to be available this summer for free under the standard Apache 2.0 license. For more information on Beehive, please visit http://dev2dev.bea.com/technologies/beehive/index.jsp

Press Release: Apache HTTP Server Technical Leadership
Congratulations and kudos to the HTTP Server Project team for their hard work and accomplishments.
To commemorate, the ASF issued this press release today:
------
Apache HTTP Server Reaches Record Eight Consecutive Years of Technical Leadership.
San Francisco, CA (May 11, 2004) The Apache Software Foundation today announced that its HTTP Server platform has reached a milestone of eight consecutive years of World Wide Web technology leadership. Since its first release in April of 1995, the Apache HTTP Server has become as pervasive as the Web itself. According to two separate and independent surveys, the Apache HTTP Server, which originally established itself as the leading web server technology in April 1996, continues to acquire even greater market, growing faster than all other competing web server technologies.
We started the Apache project to provide the development community with a secure, efficient and extensible open source Web server platform. Our goal from the very beginning was to establish the Apache HTTP Server as the dialtone of the web a standards-compliant, commercial grade reference platform. Through collaboration with the community, we have continually improved upon and added modules to the core Apache HTTP Server platform, thereby evolving the quality and breadth of the technology, said Jim Jagielski, Executive Vice President and Secretary of the Apache Software Foundation. Our recent achievement is testament to the benefits of the process of open source software development itself. By collaborating with the community, we have been able to consistently deliver freely accessible, robust, feature-rich Web server technology.
Apache HTTP Server Leadership Continues to Grow
In an April 2004 Security Space survey of 14,174,836 Web sites, the Apache HTTP Server was recognized as the most widely implemented Web server platform, with 70.48% share, representing 9,990,804 deployed servers.
In an April 2004 Netcraft survey incorporating roughly 50 million Web sites, Apache again rose to the top for the 96th straight month, with 69.01% market share and 15,747,757 active servers. According to Netcraft, the number of sites deploying Apache has grown by over 30 percent in the last twelve months, from 25 million to 33 million. Apaches growth has outpaced that of competing products, as the overall number of deployed Web sites increased by 25 percent over the same twelve month period.
"The Apache project seized the momentum in http server development within weeks of its first release and has held it ever since, growing its user community from a few hundred sites in August 1995, to several tens of millions today," added Mike Prettejohn, Director of Netcraft.
Commitment to Continued Technical Leadership
Achieving eight straight years of technology leadership confirms that the open source model works. Apache is now successfully deployed in a diverse set of environments, from large commercial entities to small nonprofit organizations. We are grateful to the community for their continued support and participation in the development process, said Sander Striker, Vice President of the Apache HTTP Server Project. We are firmly committed to continuing to provide the most accessible and standards-compliant Web server platform in existence.

Sam Ruby has skillfully guided Jakarta through difficult times and all his hard work is very much appreciated. Geir Magnusson Jr is a very well known (and liked) Jakartaen. Good luck Geir!
The 2.0 version of the Apache License was approved by the ASF (The Board has approved the new Apache License 2.0) in 2004. The goals of this license revision have been to reduce the number of frequently asked questions, to allow the license to be reusable without modification by any project (including non-ASF projects), to allow the license to be included by reference instead of listed in every file, to clarify the license on submission of contributions, to require a patent license on contributions that necessarily infringe the contributor's own patents, and to move comments regarding Apache and other inherited attribution notices to a location outside the license terms (the NOTICE file).
The result is a license that is compatible with other open source licenses, such as the GPL, and yet still remains true to the original goals of the Apache Group and supportive of collaborative development across both nonprofit and commercial organizations.
All packages produced by the ASF will be implicitly licensed under the Apache License, version 2.0, unless otherwise explicitly stated.
For more information, see Apache Licenses Page.

you don't have to write code or documentation to contribute to the
Apache Software Foundation.
This is the time of year that many people look to donate money to
charity not only out of the goodness of their heart, but for the
purposes of tax deductions, which makes Tax Day just that much nicer
in the United States.
The Apache Software Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit,
and if you pay taxes in the United States, any money that you
contribute is tax deductible.
You can contribute via PayPal:

Many companies have "Matching Gift Programs" that will double or
triple your tax-deductible contributions. Check with your personnel
office to find out if your company offers this--they should be able to
provide you with a form that you can fill out and send in with your
contribution. If your employer wishes to donate to the ASF, please
have them contact us at fundraising@apache.org

The Apache Software Foundation added their support to the protest against EU software patents by displaying a message to all visitors to all top level project pages. The text of the message follows:
On September 1st the European Commission is going to vote a revised version of the European Patentability rules. The proposed revision contains a set of serious challenges to Open Source development since regulation regarding software patents will be broadly extended and might forbid independent development of innovative (Open Source and not) software-based solutions.
The European Open Source community is very concerned about the upcoming new regulation and has organized a demo protest for August 27, asking Open Source supporting sites to change their home pages to let everyone know what is going on at the European Parliament. The Apache Software Foundation has decided to support this initiative, and this is why you are seeing this page.
For further information please see http://swpat.ffii.org and http://petition.eurolinux.org. You will be redirected automatically to the Jakarta homepage in 60 seconds (or continue on to jakarta.apache.org).

As you may have heard by now, the Apache Software Foundation has initiated a project to develop an open source, Apache-licensed implementation of the J2EE specification. In addition, the project is committed to certifying the implementation as J2EE compliant. This is an ambitious goal and will present a formidable challenge for the people involved, given the wide range of technologies covered by the specification.
The project (tentatively named "Apache Geronimo") builds upon the many Java projects at the Apache Software Foundation. In addition, the project is bringing together leading members of the Castor, JBoss, MX4J and OpenEJB communities. We would like to extend an open invitation to everyone involved in the J2EE space, both commercial entities and talented individuals, to join the community and build a world-class J2EE implementation.
The Apache Software Foundation is in a unique position to build a J2EE compliant platform. Our non-profit, charity status, and our relationship with Sun Microsystems, provides the Foundation with access to the J2EE TCKs, making it possible to achieve certification. In addition, our flexible and unrestrictive licensing makes it possible for a wide variety of participants to assist in the development of Apache Geronimo, and to build their own solutions upon the platform.
Apache Geronimo has been launched within the Apache Incubator. You can find more information about the Incubator at http://incubator.apache.org/.
Mailing Lists
Apache Geronimo has two mailing lists of interest:
geronimo-dev@incubator.apache.org
