02 April 2008 - Apache CXF 2.0.5 (incubating) Now Available

The Apache Incubator CXF team is proud to announce the availability of the 2.0.5 release

Apache CXF is an open source services framework. CXF helps you build and develop services using frontend programming APIs, like JAX-WS. These services can speak a variety of protocols such as SOAP, XML/HTTP, RESTful HTTP, or CORBA and work over a variety of transports such as HTTP, JMS or JBI.

CXF includes a broad feature set, but it is primarily focused on the following areas:

Web Services Standards Support: CXF supports a variety of web service standards including SOAP, the Basic Profile, WSDL, WS-Addressing, WS-Policy, WS-ReliableMessaging, and WS-Security.

Frontends: CXF supports a variety of "frontend" programming models. CXF provides a JAX-WS Compliant frontend. It also includes a "simple frontend" which allows creation of clients and endpoints without annotations. CXF supports both contract first development with WSDL and code first development starting from Java.

Ease of use: CXF is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. There are simple APIs to quickly build code-first services, Maven plug-ins to make tooling integration easy, JAX-WS API support, Spring 2.0 XML support to make configuration a snap, and much more.

This release is mostly a patch release to fix problems and issues (over 30 JIRA items resolved) that users have encountered in the 2.0.4-incubator release.

The Apache XML Graphics team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Apache FOP version 0.95beta.

FOP (Formatting Objects Processor) is a print formatter driven by XSL Formatting Objects [1] and an output independent formatter. It is a Java application that reads a formatting object tree and renders the resulting pages to a specified output. Output formats currently supported include PDF, PS, PCL, AFP, Print and PNG.

This beta release will be available for testing for some time, before a stable release is made. Feedback is welcome, and we would like to encourage as many people as possible to try it out and report bugs and issues on the fop-users mailing list [2]. The most important changes introduced by this release are:

many bug fixes and improvements in tables, better support for keeps and breaks, new features: conditional borders and background on columns and header/footer/body;

better image handling thanks to the new image loading framework provided by the Apache XML Graphics Commons dependency;

improvements and bugfixes for font handling and font auto-detection/-registration;

performance improvements and memory optimizations for the property handling in the FO tree.

Please note that support for Java 1.3 has been dropped. Only one type of binaries is provided now, that will run on 1.4+ JREs.

19 March 2008 - Apache James Google Summer of Code 2008

The Apache James team (http://james.apache.org) are pleased to announce that once more we are proposing ideas for Google Summer of Code student projects. This years ideas are:

1) To develop a VERP Mailet to allow James to write VERP modified return addresses on outbound messages, and an inbound mailet/matcher to identify VERP bounces and invoke configurable "do something" code.

2) James' provided mailing list manager is fine for small closed groups, but lacks the functionality of a more robust MLM, the project is to add some all or more of the following features: subscriber and message moderation, double opt-in and bounce handling.

We all look forward to welcoming Student proposals for these or any other ideas, and would welcome discussion of the ideas on the James Server Developers mailing list.

10 March 2008 - Apache XML Graphics Commons 1.3 Released

The Apache XML Graphics team is pleased to announce a new release of Apache XML Graphics Commons.

Apache XML Graphics Commons is a library that consists of several reusable components used by Apache Batik and Apache FOP. Many of these components can easily be used separately outside the domains of SVG and XSL-FO.

The most important addition in this release is an image loading framework which supports all sorts of different image formats (bitmap and vector) and is highly extensible.

Besides that, there were a larger number of smaller additions and bugfixes.

Support for Java 1.3 has been dropped. Java 1.4 or later is required now.

26 February 2008 - Apache HttpComponents HttpClient 4.0-alpha3 Now Available

The Apache HttpComponents project is pleased to announce the release of HttpComponents HttpClient 4.0-alpha3. This version brings another round of API refinements and improvements in functionality. As of this release HttpClient requires Java 5 compatible runtime environment and takes full advantage of generics and new concurrency primitives.

This release also introduces new default cookie policy that selects a cookie specification depending on the format of cookies sent by the target host. It is no longer necessary to know beforehand what kind of HTTP cookie support the target host provides. HttpClient is now able to pick up either a lenient or a strict cookie policy depending on the compliance level of the target host.

Another notable improvement is a completely reworked support for multipart entities based on Apache mime4j library.

NOTE: Tuscany is an effort undergoing incubation at the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), sponsored by the Apache Web services PMC. Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects until a further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications, and decision making process have stabilized in a manner consistent with other successful ASF projects. While incubation status is not necessarily a reflection of the completeness or stability of the code, it does indicate that the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF.

05 February 2008 - Apache Cayenne 3.0M3 Now Available

The Apache Cayenne team is pleased to present the third milestone of Cayenne 3. This is a development branch of Cayenne and still undergoing significant changes. A number of developers are using it in production systems, however if you want the most stable and tested version of Cayenne you should use version 1.x or 2.x which have a proven track record and are widely used in deployment.

This milestone release adds some exciting new features, including enhancements to the Cayenne modeler for lifecycle listeners and callbacks and the ability to merge changes to the model back to the database, extensive new work toward full JPA compliance, updates to cgen and the templates, and much more.

This release requires Java 5 as a minimum. The decision to change the required JDK was made after a poll of users revealed no substantial need for Java 1.4 and plenty of benefits in moving forward. Generics are only partially completed in the public API at this time and we continue to try and balance the opportunities and headaches of a clean generics interface.

More details can be found here:

The Apache Lucene Project has released the version 2.3.0 of Lucene Java.

Many new features, optimizations, and bug fixes have been added since 2.2, including:

significantly improved indexing performance

segment merging in background threads

refreshable IndexReaders

faster StandardAnalyzer and improved Token API

TermVectorMapper to customize how term vectors are loaded

live backups (without pausing indexing) with SnapshotDeletionPolicy

CheckIndex tool to test & recover a corrupt index

pluggable MergePolicy & MergeScheduler

"partial" optimize(int maxNumSegments) method

New contrib module for working with Wikipedia content

The detailed change log is at: http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/lucene/java/tags/lucene_2_3_0/CHANGES.txt

Lucene 2.3 includes index format changes that are not readable by older versions of Lucene. Lucene 2.3 can both read and update older Lucene indexes. Adding to an index with an older format will cause it to be converted to the newer format.

Binary and source distributions are available at http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.cgi/lucene/java/

26 January 2008 - Apache HttpComponents HttpCore 4.0-beta1 Now Available

The Apache HttpComponents project is pleased to announce the release of HttpComponents HttpCore 4.0-beta1. This release can be considered a major milestone, as it marks the end of API instability in HttpCore. As of this release the API compatibility between minor releases in 4.x codeline will be maintained.

This release includes several major improvements such as enhanced HTTP message parsing API and optimized parser implementations, Java 5.0 compatibility for HttpCore NIO extensions.

The focus of the development efforts will be gradually shifting towards providing better test coverage, documentation and performance optimizations.

About HttpComponents Core - The HttpCore components implement the most fundamental aspects of the HTTP protocol. They are nonetheless sufficient to develop basic client side and server side HTTP services with a minimal footprint and no external dependencies. HttpCore NIO extensions can be used to build asynchronous HTTP services based on non-blocking I/O model capable of handling a great number of simultaneous connections with just a few I/O threads.

HttpCore will form the foundation of the future releases of Apache HttpClient.
